Tshepo Mapeshoane, no. 1, Black Boy Series. Vosloorus, January 2013.

Tshepo Mapeshoane 1 - Vosloorus Jan 2013

This is an image I made of Tshepo Mapeshoane in January 2013.
Tshepo lives in Vosloorus, east-rand, Gauteng, with his father’s eldest sister.
Tshepo used to live with his dad and grandma in Katlehong. But she’s getting on in years. Tshepo’s father died in 2012. Apparently, his mother doesn’t want him.
He is not in school, Tshepo. He was said to be too old for the grade he is in. Twice he had failed the grade. Seems that school’s over for him. Seems like he has few options then. What will happen to the boy? He doesn’t have money to go to a technical school. He doesn’t seem to have another plan, or couldn’t tell me of one.
Even then, I was struck by his daring ‘this is me’ look in this picture. And the beautiful Amakhosi t-shirt. I can imagine Tshepo as something else. That’s my project: to reimagine black boys and men. To think, what if?
